Diamond is known for its superlative physical qualities, many of which stem from the strong molecular bonds between its atoms. In particular, it has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any bulk material. Diamond is the crystallized form of pure carbon (99.95% to 99.98%), the strongest mineral on Earth and one of the oldest substances known to man. The chemical formula for diamond is C, which is the chemical symbol for the element carbon.
Earth is estimated to be 4.5 billion years old. Most of the diamonds we find today began forming between 1 billion and 3.3 billion years ago, under intense heat (about 1,204°C) and immense pressure, more than 150 km below Earth's surface, in the mantle, an area composed of volcanic magma. Diamond ore, in its raw form, doesn't look like the shiny nuggets found in engagement rings. Diamonds must be selected, cut, and polished to enhance their brilliance. On average, 250 tons of ore are needed to produce a one-carat gem-quality polished diamond.
Rough diamonds come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and clarity. They can be transparent, translucent, or opaque. The larger, whiter, and cleaner the diamond, the rarer it is. However, colored diamonds can command high prices, including blue, pink, green, yellow, brown, orange, violet, black, or gray.
